Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
